Dogs in Translation Workbook by Katja Krauss and Gabi Maue

In the book, Dogs In Translation, there were a wide variety of expressions, communication signals and behaviours which dogs use in different situations. With this workbook, the aim is to help you school your eye so you are able to pick up the important, subtle details that reveal how our dogs feel.

It features photos or photo sequences, with a short description of the situation, and ask you to describe what you see. Then answer the questions for each situation.

For example: “What do you think will happen next in this situation?” Once you have made your evaluation, you can turn to the end of the book to discover the outcome. It is grouped by exercises so that they correlate to the chapters in The Emotional Life of Dogs. However, you work through them in the order you prefer.

There are no points awarded for getting the answers ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. This is not a competition, it is about creating awareness and fine-tuning your observation skills. Once you know what to look for, you will get better at noticing the most subtle of signals and, with time and experience, you will evaluate situations correctly. Eventually, there will come a time when your understanding becomes instinctive; you will know instantly how a dog is feeling. When that happens, we have achieved our goal!
